Dave "Avey Tare" Portner's best moments on Animal Collective records tend to be the most raucous, and it makes you wonder what he's holding back. In Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks, ex-Dirty Projector Angel Deradoorian seems exactly like the collaborator to bring it out of him, though she's barely noticeable on Enter the Slasher House until you get to the coda of "The Outlaw." Still, this band frees him up to rock out a little bit and ditch the experimental mystique for some straightforward psychedelia, especially on surprisingly hooky cuts like "Duplex Trip" and "That It Won't Grow."
