Don't let the lead single of Avril's fourth album fool you. Despite the screw-you attitude and bouncy, bratty ("Girlfriend" redux) aesthetic of "What the Hell," this is one brokenhearted effort. Ostensibly processing her divorce from Sum 41's Deryck Whibley (who produced much of the album), the Sk8r Girl pours her heart into confessional rocker after confessional rocker that cover all the stages of a breakup: doubt ("Push"), grief (the acoustic-driven "Wish You Were Here"), unabashed backslide (the party cut "Smile"). Avril sans attitude is a bit dull, but she's developing a mature range.
