Barbara Acklin

This underrated R&B vocalist had a smooth-as-butter voice that was both girlish and sophisticated. Joined with easy grooves, subtle string arrangements and solid songwriting (often by Acklin and husband/Chi-Lites vocalist Eugene Record), it made for a winning formula that's been commercially rediscovered by acts MC Hammer and Swing Out Sister, among others.
