Batida is the first album from this exciting project by Angolan-Portuguese DJ Mpula. But it's also the debut of Soundway Records' (known for juicy vintage world music comps) new foray into contemporary music. In keeping with that crate-digger spirit, Batida's sound revolves around samples of 1970s Angolan music, doctored up with electro-beats and hip-hop. Conceptually, it traces a lineage between traditional music and kuduro (one that feels inevitable on elegant tracks like "Bazuka"). But emotionally? On cuts like "Yumbala," all you're going to care about is the frenetic, fabulous party.
