BiographyThis Bay Area trio was hastily assembled back in 2007 when Miles Copeland told Zoe Jakes he was looking for a young band to produce. Jakes quickly volunteered her own band -- which didn't yet exist -- and grabbed boyfriend David Satori and friend Tommy Cappel to throw some tracks together. The group's initial sound was acoustic and belly dance-focused (Jakes is a belly dancer known for her work with Extra Action Marching Band, among other groups), but over the course of several albums the group evolved a beat-heavy amalgam of global influences. Any given track can call on North African gnawa, Indian folk, tango or old-school jazz, though belly dance and electronica remain the sonic glue that holds it all together.
