On his 12th album, our favorite "Loser" steps out from under his veil of funk and kitsch to replay the role of sensitive singer-songwriter. Morning Phase circles back over a decade to 2002's Sea Change, bringing back the latter's palette of lush strings, acoustic strums and contemplative croons, then touching it up with droning keys and '70s country-rock tones. This theme of coming full circle runs throughout, and though we've heard him confess his loneliness before, this time he fully embraces it, finding faith in the blank slate brought on by the sunrise ("Morning," "Waking Light").
