The Belcea Quartet has a fondness for these underappreciated Britten quartets and, through this stellar recording, has introduced the works to a new generation of listeners. Composed between 1941 and 1975, they span the composer's youth to his success with Peter Grimes and Death in Venice. The First Quartet is notable for its youthful enthusiasm and cloud-like opening. The Second features a theme and variations in dedication to British composer Henry Purcell. The Third, written shortly before Britten's death, is a quiet farewell.
