French composition is the organizing theme for this fantastic album of modern quartet compositions performed by the Belcea Quartet. Debussy's sole quartet, the 1898 G minor, begins the album with gusto. Listen to the stunning second, pizzicato movement for a glimpse of the composer's fascination with the Balinese gamelan. Ravel's Quartet in F is even lighter, almost improvisatory, while the Dutilleux, written in the mid-1970s, takes a bit of listening to reveal itself. The Quartet worked with the composer on that recording, so this is likely the most faithful realization.
