Bassist/composer Allison offers a heady brand of Avant-Garde-informed Post Bop, leading mid-sized groups of six or seven through elaborate pieces that mix a little freedom with a lot of discipline. Though leavened at times with a sort of musicians' humor, his is thoughtful music that reveals its secrets only after repeated listenings.
