Benji Hughes is something of a post-pop maven, playing a bit of Beck's sarcasm against the dead-serious gothic falsetto of fellow North Carolinian Mark Linkous. With its wry writing and mellow disco treatment, "You Stood Me Up" showcases Hughes' strengths in a one fell swoop. The melodies of "Where Do Old Lovers Go" or "All You've Got to Do Is Fall in Love" are as sweet and sludgy as honey to balance the relatively up tunes like the spacey "So Well" or revealingly titled "I Went With Some Friends to See the Flaming Lips."
