Strauss, R.: Also sprach Zarathustra
Released: Sep 2013
On Tracks 1-9, conductor Gustavo Dudamel boxes with Herbert von Karajan's version of "Zarathustra" -- perhaps the most famous classical recording ever, due to its use in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Bold! Wisely, Dudamel doesn't try to outdo Karajan's momentum in the Prelude: he rolls out the tutti, one-two punches more slowly. Some movements feel like "warm bath" Strauss, actually: The "Von den Hinterweltlern" is winsome, while the penultimate movement is quite flirty. But Dudamel offers powerful moments also. His takes on two other Strauss tone poems round out the interesting program.
