Thankful 'N Thoughtful is one in a series of concept albums by the raspy-voiced soul veteran Bettye LaVette that blends her gritty blues style with an esoteric list of cover songs, including The Black Keys' "I'm Not the One", The Pogues' "Dirty Old Town" and Bob Dylan's "Everything Is Broken." Her version of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" is a weak spot -- she turns it into a torch ballad, but it doesn't have the effervescence of the original. However, the rest of Thankful 'N Thoughtful, especially "Dirty Old Town" and "I'm Tired," lives up to her standard of raw, unfiltered soul.
