Roughly eight years after leaving the Mice, whose reputation as Ohio power-pop legends had grown exponentially in that time, the mercurial Bill Fox reemerged as an indie singer-songwriter exploring heartland-flavored bedroom recordings. Grounded by the Cleveland guitarist's intricate picking and hook-laden tunes, 1996's Shelter from the Smoke is a tender and, at times, heartbreaking fusion of jangly Brit pop and Dylan-inspired folk. "Lonesome Pine" in particular is a perfect slice of Midwest life.
