This sublime release from Karaoke Kalk finds Scottish polymath Bill Wells and Dusseldorf's versatile Stefan Schneider (To Rococo Rot, September Collective) getting unusually elemental. In a duet for grand piano and reel-to-reel tape, Wells improvises and Schneider responds with real-time tape manipulations. The result, reminiscent of Harold Budd's limpid recordings, is a fluid feedback loop of phrases and shifting tone colors, collapsing live and Memorex into something vital and unique.
