Long before there were genres such as math rock, slowcore and post-metal, there was the mighty Bitch Magnet (there was Tar, too, but that's a whole other story). This triple-disc set rounds up just about everything the outfit committed to tape in the late 1980s. Their unique sound was more or less the post-hardcore bridge linking Big Black's jarring aggression and Slint's meditative lumber. Though they weren't around long -- about three years is it -- Bitch Magnet's fusion of bass-thumping groovery, heavy riffage and intricate changes has proven to be profoundly influential through the years.
