Under his Willie Burns alias, New York's William Thomas Burnett makes the sort of lo-fi, leftfield techno associated with labels like L.I.E.S. and The Trilogy Tapes. As Black Deer, he nudges that sound even further towards the outer limits, burying 4/4 kicks beneath mounds of dubbed-out synths, and plunging frigid synth pop into a cauldron of dub delay. Plucked guitars give "First of September" the feel of Durutti Column gone acid house, while "New Break" proffers lilting rainforest funk, and the closing "Holiday" and "Strike 3" are ebulliently uneasy new wave.
