Controversial upon release because of the sound of the album, Loose Nut bristles with the metal force that had been gradually informing Black Flag's music since My War. The vocals are cloaked in echo and the guitars form a wall of pure thud throughout. Interestingly, Loose Nut sounds a bit like Minor Threat's Out Of Step album, in that the guitar and bass produce a similar "metallic" heaviness, but that album did not create a division in punk. Sometimes it seems as if every single thing Black Flag did had some kind of impact.
