Master Of Reality by Black Sabbath
Released: Jul 1971
Label: Rhino/Warner Bros.
Pot prayer "Sweet Leaf" (grandpa of the Butthole Surfers' "Sweat Loaf") and rumble of the gods "Children of the Grave" (grandpa of Blondie's "Call Me," the Buttholes' "Dum Dum" and every other song that stole its groove) are downright primal; crucifixion crusade "After Forever" and astronomical Armageddon "Into the Void" downright apocalyptic. Even the quiet parts of Sabbath's third album -- teensy medieval church interludes "Embryo" and "Orchid," still-and-lonely-in-the-forest ballad "Solitude" -- emit a malevolence barely known in rock before 1971. Plus, it all starts with Iommi coughing!
