Sabotage by Black Sabbath
Released: Aug 1975
Label: Rhino/Warner Bros.
The band's most underrated album, 1975's Sabotage explodes not only with gargantuan riffs, but with strange cut-ups, trap doors, secret passageways, parts within parts, evil laughs, snippets of old-timey folk, medicinal canals burbling "obsessed, op. cit, upset," Gregorian chants (in "Supertzar") midway between the Yardbirds and Enigma, holes in the metal to match the ozone-layer ones Ozzy pokes his head toward heaven through in huge opener "Hole in the Sky" -- which, like the near-Mediterranean "Symptom of the Universe" and stardom-anxiety finale "The Writ," ranks with Sab's most monstrous.
