Just call Blas Duran the Dylan of Bachata! Bachata's mainstreaming took a massive leap when Duran, an already established bachatero who learned the form from his cousin Edilio Paredes, went electric. In 1986, he recorded the first bachata to feature electric guitar, the wildly popular bachata-merengue hybrid "Consejo a las mujeres." Duran's sound was lively, fun and infectiously danceable, helping to win over the stubborn ruling classes, as well as audiences in the U.S., where Duran became one of the first bachateros to play extensively.
