The U.K.'s Blawan is emblematic of a movement too volatile to have earned a proper name -- a generation of (mostly) young producers hailing from dubstep and drum 'n' bass now throwing themselves wholeheartedly into house and techno's 4/4 cadences. The results sound both familiar and fresh: In Blawan's case, it means bruising drums, meaty low end and a lurch endemic to this scene-without-a-name. The original mix throws down between clenched synth riffs and metallic percussion; "Peaches (Freestone)" lets the off-beats do the work, slipping and sliding over breakbeat's scattered bones.
