VII by Blitzen Trapper
Released: Sep 2013
Label: VAGRANT
On their seventh album, Blitzen Trapper choose to breathe easy. They streamline their weirdness here, which seemed inconceivable on the ramshackle breakthrough Wild Mountain Nation six years previous. This is a country-rock album dipped in acid, with Beck-style harmonica rap on "Feel the Chill" and banjo breakbeats on "Neck Tatts, Cadillacs." But songs like "Ever Loved Once" and "Drive On Up" are as traditional folk tunes as they've ever put forth -- even if the latter has Prince-like synths.
