Blockhead works in a seemingly dormant sub-genre of downtempo, and with its telltale clock chimes and sleepy vibes, his fifth album Interludes After Midnight could have easily been issued during DJ Shadow and Thievery Corporation's heyday. What the New York producer lacks in innovation he makes up with storytelling ability. He layers vocal samples and instrumental sounds on tracks like "Hungover like Whoa" and "Smoke Signals" to end at different conclusions than their modest starts portend, even if their languid pace generates heavy eyelids as well as deep introspection.
