The ever-undervalued trumpeter Blue Mitchell can be heard on many of Horace Silver's classic Blue Note albums from the 1950s and '60s, but few of his own solo LPs are still in print. Here, Mitchell leads a band headed up by saxophonists Benny Golson and Jimmy Heath (who both contributed small group arrangements to the date). The band's foundation is pianist Wynton Kelly's rhythm section, which helps keep the emphasis on swinging. Mitchell's tone and phrasing on the Golson private-eye ballad "Park Avenue Petite" are letter-perfect and sound even better on this remastered edition.
