The 10th volume in Dylan's Bootleg Series tries to shed light on 1970, a contentious year for the icon. In those 12 months, he released Self-Portrait, generally considered his worst, and New Morning, arguably his most underappreciated. What this collection of outtakes, live recordings and remastered material suggests is that both records emerged from the same stretch of experimentation, one that found him trying out a subtle country-gospel sound. Still, this doesn't explain why Self-Portrait is so bad and New Morning so damn good. But alas, Dylan has never been a fan of definitive answers.
