Bob Marley's songs are so iconic and recognizable that remix efforts often seem to obscure his brilliance rather than reinterpret it. Billing itself as the first official Marley remix album, Roots starts out by treading lightly -- and wisely -- on what is a near-sacred catalog for many. But the album ends up turning the man's analog recordings into raw organic material to be etched upon, obscured and reframed by all the whirling ghosts to be found in a 21st century DJ's machine. Remarkably subtle, the album may not be a revelation, but it certainly is a pleasure.
