Bobby Jr. filters country basics -- learned from his Country Music Hall of Fame father, Bobby Bare -- through somewhat dirgy alt-rock, and comes up with mostly good results. "The Big Time" is an upbeat tune with chipper mariachi-esque horns; it's a direct contrast to his throaty, flat delivery, which enhances the cynical tale of empty promises -- and it's a pure delight. "Don't Wanna Know" bounces on a fuzzy bass line that cuts through dreamy shoegazer guitars and lush girl/boy harmonies, while "If She Cared" and "My Baby Took My Baby Away" recall the rough-and-tumble alt country of Hayes Carll.
