We're not sure why it took so long for a collaboration between North Africa's desert rockers and North America's garage rockers, but Bombino is a great first experimenter. The Tuareg guitarist's complex sound is an apt match for Dan Auerbach's echoing production. He can pull off a boisterous jam session like "Her Tenere" (with its spaghetti western swagger) or a rolling blues of the Saharan variety. And he can hold his own in Auerbach's production, which sometimes feels like the desert's sprawling vistas have been relocated to a warehouse with high ceilings. An intriguing effort.
