Label: Planet Mu
When Barry Lynn began recording as Boxcutter in 2005, the name suited his jagged, glinting beats like a sheath fits a blade. With his fourth album for Planet Mu, it looks like he might need a new name. Recalling his label-mates Oriol and FaltyDL, or the laid-back Floating Points, Lynn eases into a set of Rhodes-drenched funk and summery breakbeat fantasias as colorful as the record's sleeve. Instead of dubstep's coiled attack, rhythms swing between lackadaisical hip-hop and airy house grooves. Tinged with Stevie Wonder and Weather Report, it's a humid, tropical LP as refreshing as a mojito.
