Brenda & the Tabulations
Were people more sentimental in the 1970s, or does it just sound like it? All those pre-Reagan era good feelings and smooth-as-a-Ripple-float Soul sounds made their way into the downy, soft songs of Brenda & the Tabulations, making them sound a bit like the Stylistics with a female lead singer. Along with sweeping arrangements, heavenly, soaring backup vocals scaling the soprano scale, and gentle bass plucking its way along the bottom rungs, Brenda Payton's tasteful vocals sound like they could mend a broken heart with one gorgeous note. The group never quite built a sizable stack of hits, but their most memorable hit, "Right On the Tip of My Tongue," is worth a revolution on your turntable during one of your sniffly, sentimental moments.
