As the frontman for '90s Brit-pop glam stalwarts Suede, Brett Anderson made a living out of documenting the hedonism, sexual ambiguity and excess of London's dirty, pretty things. On Wilderness, his first solo album, he conveys a real man-alone-in-his-manor vibe. On songs like the single "A Different Place" and "The Empress," Anderson, accompanied by only piano and strings, sings nostalgically about London skies and lost love, taking stock of things and looking back with, if not anger, definitely some regret.
