Though Bonnie "Prince" Billy, who contributes vocals on a handful of tracks, receives equal billing on the cover, Silent City is composer Brian Harnetty's album through and through. Like its predecessor American Winter, the album is a collage-like fusion of cerebral post-rock experimentation and rustic field recordings culled from American roots culture and music. The emphasis on Silent City, however, has been shifted to the former, with the latter merely serving as accents and highlights.
