Brian Wilson spins George Gershwin through the Beach Boys prism -- and through his 1950s childhood -- and ends up with a set that feels fresh and fun. Wilson has a soul mate in Gershwin: Both combine different genres (including jazz, classical and pre-rock vocal groups); both knew how to spin harmonic complexity into catchy melodies; both had illnesses that left them isolated and misunderstood (in Gershwin's case an undiagnosed brain tumor left him nearly friendless before his early death). There are even two new tunes -- "The Like In I Love You" and "Nothing But Love" that Wilson got to complete from Gershwin fragments.
