Jazzers have adapted some of Karlheinz Stockhausen's music-box Tierkreis melodies before. But here's the first complete set in that style to see a recording. It's great! Pianist Heinen's group has the range to make all the pieces work: "Sagittarius" becomes a bass solo; "Libra" is scored for music box and free percussion; "Pisces" turns into a woodwind duo; a couple melodies get the ballad treatment. And when the group cuts loose, they swing Stockhausen hard, as on "Leo" and "Scorpio." It's even better if you know the other versions, but this album can work just fine as a first introduction.
