Incarcerated since December 2009 and beginning a federal trial for cocaine possession just as this album released, Buju Banton was facing serious darkness... and a seemingly distant dawn. These songs, recorded before his arrest, bristle with uncanny presentiment, whether it's "Bondage," "Battered and Bruised" or "Do Good." (You'll wish he'd taken his own advice.) Banton has returned to straight-ahead reggae, and he is wonderfully at home: The songs highlight both his impassioned vocal presence and his lyrical insight. In an alternate universe, an album this good would get him out of jail.
