Fresh off two inexplicable alt-rock hits (droll anthem "The Distance" and an even droller cover of "I Will Survive"), Sacramento's finest stay the course on their third outing, mixing sombrero-twirling Mexi-Cali ribaldry with expertly chintzy synth-funk frivolity. "Never There" is a goofy pop trifle with impressively militaristic precision, not a shaker or bloopy keyboard line or vibraslap out of place. Snarling sing-along "Sheep Go to Heaven" is the centerpiece, wherein John McCrea gets to croon "Go to hell!" a bunch of times in as jovial and inviting a manner as possible. Come join him.
