What should have been a triumphant meeting between Cal Tjader and Charlie Byrd plays more like an interesting, early-'70s fusion set but this set is still recommended. More modern Brazilian than Caribbean, Tjader offers a beautiful reading of "Black Narcissus," and Byrd gets to shine on Stevie Wonder's "My Cherie Amour" (it's good -- we swear). Both work together very nicely on "San Francisco River" and other tunes. Keyboardist Michael Wolfe seems to dominate much of the session, but he plays well enough for it not to be an issue.
