The Best Of Cal Tjader At Monterey
Cal Tjader
Released:
Aug 2008
Label:
Concord Records
This set compiles items from many of Cal Tjader's visits to the premier West Coast jazz festival. The first few tracks feature his breakthrough band (with Vince Guaraldi on piano). Bop clarinetist Buddy DeFranco also sits in with the group on a fine mix of straight-ahead bop and Latin jazz. Things jump ahead for a blazing trip through Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca," and Tjader gets to show off his supple way with a ballad on "If You Could See Me Now." The set ends at 1980, so listeners hungry for more of Tjader at Monterey should go to his fine Concert by the Sea album.
