It's too bad Cali Swag District released The Kickback several months after their million-selling ringtone "Teach Me How to Dougie" peaked, and shortly after co-founder M-Bone was murdered in May 2011. (Sadly, the group's tribute to him, "How To Do That [M-Bone]," is not included.) The group tries to extend its moment with more minimalist swag rap, including "Roof Back," "Kickback" and "Back It Up And Dump It." "Hip Hop Fiend" is a surprising homage to rap fandom in the vein of KRS-One's name-check classic "I Can't Wake Up."
