Not the very first stirrings of doom metal but pretty damn close, Candlemass' second record, released way back in 1987, is a blend of Trouble, Pentagram and, especially, Mercyful Fate. As one might expect from the confluence of these bands, the riffs are mid-tempo, the vocals are practically operatic and the gloominess is palpable, pervasive ... perverted? No, gothic metal may not have the best reputation but here, in its undiluted form, you don't even need eyeliner to get it. It can't hurt though. No matter, this album sold a jillion copies.
