A demo collection is typically geared towards an artist's biggest fans, but here this isn't the case. Originally circulated among artists in need of songs to record, these tapes are a total revelation. King is, of course, considered one of the 1960s' great composers, but to hear her unload one classic after another drives home the extent of her talents. What's really amazing is the fact that these performances weren't deemed appropriate for commercial release. Then again, this makes sense when you consider master singers like Aretha Franklin and The Everly Brothers were covering her work.
