Released: Jan 2010
Label: Nonesuch
It's their second album reviving African-American string band music, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops put their hands into a history that's both explosive (the album's named for a song a white composer copped from an African-American family) and frequently invisible. But the Drops never forget that before this music became their research project, it was down-home dance music for tired workers. They have fun with it, and so do we -- particularly when R&B singer Blu Cantrell's "Hit 'Em Up Style" gets an old-timey makeover.
