Leaving Eden by Carolina Chocolate Drops
Released: Feb 2012
Label: Nonesuch
Leaving Eden is another potent release from the Carolina Chocolate Drops. The trio's skill at fusing jug band, old time and Piedmont blues is evident on driving renditions of "Ruby, Are You Mad at Your Man?" and "Po' Black Sheep." Another keeper is the J.E. Mainer tune "Run Mountain," which boasts lyrical flute work recalling the great Henry Thomas. As per usual, some tunes (like "Country Girl") are the result of the group's filtering archaic folk through hip-hop and modern R&B. As usual, these curiosities don't gel particularly well with the rest of the album.
