Schulhoff: Piano Works, Vol. 2
Released: Jun 2013
Label: Grand Piano
Erwin Schulhoff's jazz-influenced piano pieces are just now being played (and recorded) as much as they deserve to be. Weichert's second all-Schulhoff album begins with the Five Picturesques (Tracks 1-5, including a "silent" piece pre-dating John Cage's by decades) and closes with the six Jazz Sketches -- all of which she imbues with a palpable, nearly naughty joy. Not everything here is jazzy -- the "Vorspiel" from Op. 35 looks ahead to the composer's atonal period -- but some European-style works (like the Piano Sonata No. 2) still feature fun rhythmic invention. Weichert aces 'em all.
