The Chan Marshall of the mid-1990s never would've been able to pull off a covers album. Yet in the five short years between the release of her debut, Dear Sir, and The Covers Record, she evolved into a skilled and sensitive interpreter. She makes this material wholly her own, be it something popular (the Stones' "Satisfaction") or obscure (Bill Callahan's "Red Apples"). A special treat, and maybe the best song on the record, is her tender version of Moby Grape's "Naked If I Want To."
