On her 2006 debut, CeU was poised at the nexus of multiple traditions: forward-looking electronica, classic bossa nova and a surprising left field: Afrobeat and reggae. If Cangote's any indication, she's heading further afield, exploring Brazilian funk that's heavy on dub effects and musty atmospherics. In such hazy company, CeU's stellar voice cuts through the fog, a lovely ingenue slumming it in the city's opium dens while somehow keeping her wits about her. It's an intriguing taste of the sophomore release to come.
