In The Jungle, Babe/Express Yourself
Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band
Released:
Mar 1997
Label:
Warner Bros.
Simply one of the most overlooked groups of all time, Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band were at their prime in 1970, when they released this masterstroke. There are several moments of complete brilliance here, starting with the scorching opening track, slowing down for a gorgeous cover of the Doors' "Light My Fire," jumping up for a few scathing instrumental workouts, and culminating with the unforgettable "Express Yourself." While some overly syrupy numbers diminish the overall pace, Wright's vocal delivery is perfectly soulful and his eight-piece band a model of syncopated restraint revved up by unrelenting funk.
