There's more to Parisian house than Daft Punk. Since 1996, Chateau Flight (I:Cube and Gilb-R) and their Versatile label have drawn the French touch in even broader strokes, pairing white-knuckled techno and pumping acid house with dreamy ambient escapades and forays into electronic jazz-funk. The duo's debut album, from 2000, is one of the highlights of the "broken beat" era, balancing off-center grooves with tribal house and disco rhythms and availing itself of unusually lush electro-acoustic sound design. It still sounds just as fresh.
