Naming it The Latest wasn't the only goofy thing Cheap Trick did with this 2009 album -- they also made it available on eight-track! Neither gimmick should obscure the fact that it's a pretty good set, even if its catchiest song by far ("When the Lights Are Out") is a Slade cover. "California Girl" (not to be confused with 1978's "California Man") is wild old-time R&B-style rock 'n' roll; "Everyday You Make Me Crazy" is commendably heavy, albeit extremely short. Add some frillier Beatles-esque pop, and you get a start-to-end listen more painless than most of their middle-age-era output.
