Cheka

Biography

Cheka may not have released his solo debut until 2007, but this reggaeton stalwart has been in the game since nearly the beginning. Unlike a lot of reggaeton stories, David Lozada's starts in Brooklyn, where he lived until he was 10-years-old, when his family moved back to Guayama, Puerto Rico. One has to imagine the move destabilized Lozada's world, but it didn't seem to slow him down: not long after moving to Puerto Rico, he started rapping and singing in the then-underground reggaeton scene. His first break came when he was tapped to produce early reggaeton star DJ Playero's Dejavu. That opened doors, and soon he was producing for all the emerging reggaeton stars, including Baby Rasta, Gringo and ultimately Daddy Yankee. He famously worked with Luny Tunes on Don Omar's monster hit "Dale Don Dale" and enjoyed his own first hit with "No Te Olvidare." After making the cut for the influential Chosen Few: El Documental reggaeton compilation, it was only a matter of time until Cheka released his own solo record. Sin Rivales dropped in 2007, and the masterful, eclectic production made it stand out from a crowded field of would-be rivals.
